117. Sally Mann

Last semester, My B&W photography teacher wrote down some photographers and painters she thought I would like. I finally got around to googling the list this morning and, while I loved them all, I was mesmerized by Sally Mann. 

In Mann's earlier work, she photographed her kids at their summer cabin in the South. The photographs create a beautiful and unnerving world of inescapable childhood, summer, and play. As one critic put it, she "created a place that looked like Eden, then cast upon it the subdued and shifting light of nostalgia, sexuality, and death." Most of these photos are from her book "Immediate Family" if you want to look for more!
